Pettitte leads Yanks over Reds 4-0

NEW YORK (AP) ? Andy Pettitte gave the New York Yankees a Turn Back the Clock night.

Provided a one-run lead for much of the night, the 39-year-old left-hander put together a vintage performance in his second start following a one-year layoff. Pettitte pitched four-hit ball over eight innings Friday for his first regular-season win since July 2010, leading the New York Yankees over the Cincinnati Reds 4-0.

"I felt like I could do this, and now it's just like I feel like the mind's getting back there," a beaming Pettitte said after his 241st win. "I'm just hoping and praying the body holds up."

Making his second major league start since ending his one-year retirement, Pettitte (1-1) limited the young, free-swinging Reds to four singles. With a fastball that reached 90 mph, an excellent cutter and a sharp curve, he struck out nine and walked one, throwing 78 of 115 pitches for strikes.

"I miss the competition," Pettitte said. "I do ? I guess I do miss this, from the standpoint of being around the team and stuff like that."

Pettitte was given a 1-0 lead on Alex Rodriguez's RBI grounder in the fourth. Robinson Cano homered against Bronson Arroyo (2-2) in the eighth and Raul Ibanez hit a two-run drive, his eighth homer of the season.

Not since July 8, 2008, had Pettitte pitched eight shutout innings.

"When I caught him, years and years ago, it was fastball, cutter and really curveball. He's got so many more weapons to go to," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "I thought he could bring some stabilization to our rotation. And I think he'll do that just because of who he is, his personality, his will, his focus. We are a different rotation with him."

Pettitte had been 0-2 in five starts since winning at Seattle on July 8, 2010 ? five days before he pitched in the All-Star game. After missing much of the second half because of a groin strain, he beat Minnesota in Game 2 of the AL division series.

In all, Pettitte went 680 days between regular-season wins, the most for the Yankees since Carl Pavano's 687 from May 22, 2005 to April 9, 2007, according to STATS LLC.

"He must have been doing something real good when he was retired," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "He looked as sharp as I've ever seen him."

Cincinnati didn't advance a runner past first base after the first inning.

"Even though he might not have quite the stuff that he used to, he tries to pitch smart, never really gets in a pattern and he made his pitches," said Jay Bruce, who went 0 for 4 and struck out twice. "He was doing exactly what he wanted to do out there tonight, and we could never get anything going."

In his first start, at Yankee Stadium on Sunday, Pettitte allowed four runs over 6 1-3 innings in a 6-2 loss to Seattle.

"I didn't think I might have been a little up tight last game, but I just feel like I maybe wasn't quite as relaxed as I need to be," Pettitte said.

Boone Logan pitched a perfect ninth, completing the four-hitter as the Yankees stopped a three-game losing streak with their second shutout this season.

New York went ahead when Rodriguez slapped a grounder to shortstop off Arroyo ? not the pitcher's glove, as he infamously did near first base in Game 6 of the AL championship series against Boston.

"I don't think about it a whole lot," Arroyo said. "If I would have thumped him with two outs and no one on base tonight, then I'm sure it would have come to mind, because I'm sure he would have let me know. But I'm out there to battle and try to beat guys, and it's always been like that for me. I don't know Alex from a hole in the wall, so I can't say if he thinks about it when I'm pitching. He's done so many things in his career. I'm sure Bronson Arroyo is not the highest thing on the list."

Cano doubled the lead with his fourth homer of the season, a drive deep into the right-field bleachers. Ibanez chased Arroyo after four runs and nine hits in 7 2-3 innings.

New York's homers came after another night of struggles with runners in scoring position. The Yankees were 0 for 7 ? wasting a bases-loaded, no-outs threat in the sixth ? and are hitless in 19 consecutive at-bats with RISP, dropping to 3 for their last 48 (.063).

Cincinnati, the first team since interleague play started in 1997 to play at the Mets and Yankees on consecutive days, got an early baserunner when Zack Cozart struck out leading off but the ball kicked off the glove of catcher Chris Stewart, who was catching Pettitte for the first time. Cozart wound up at second on the passed ball and a throwing error by Stewart, who wildly flung the ball well over first baseman Nick Swisher.

Cozart took third on Drew Stubbs' sacrifice but was stranded when Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips struck out. After allowing Ryan Hanigan's leadoff single in the third, Pettitte struck out the side.

"You knew that we've been struggling," Pettitte said. "Like I tell these young guys, big league Ws are precious. ... I feel like what I do is pretty good, separating myself from others, is mentally I feel like I'm extremely strong."

NOTES: A day after Donna Summer's death, her rendition of "God Bless America" was played during the seventh-inning stretch. ... New York 1B Mark Teixeira, bothered by a cough since early April, was given the night off. ... New York RHP Ivan Nova (4-1) remains scheduled to start Saturday. If his bruised and sprained right foot gives Nova trouble while warming up, the Yankees would turn to Freddy Garcia. Homer Bailey (1-3) starts for the Reds. ... The Reds were shut out for the first time this year.

Guys have the edge going into 'Idol' finale

By Craig Berman, TODAY.com contributor

Michael Becker / FOX

Will Phillip Phillips, Jessica Sanchez or Joshua Ledet get cut? It's hard to tell this season who'll make the final two.

In most years, the penultimate week of ?American Idol? serves to finally eliminate the interloper, the singer who?s clearly at a disadvantage compared to the top two. Last year it was Haley Reinhart, whose exit paved the way for the Scotty McCreery-Lauren Alaina finale that everyone expected, and Casey James ceded the floor to Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox in season nine. (Hey, it made sense at the time.) In most other ?Idol? seasons, by the time we got to the middle of May, everyone knew who the two favorites were.

That?s not true in season 11. And while a gambler would probably lay the odds on a Joshua Ledet-Phillip Phillips final with Jessica Sanchez going home Thursday, there?s a legitimate case to be made that any of the remaining contestants could be in danger this week.

Phillip got the most criticism of anyone on Wednesday, as nobody liked the song he chose for himself (Matchbox 20?s ?Disease?). But that was only one of his three performances, and when he closed the show strong with Jimmy Iovine?s pick, Bob Seger's ?We?ve Got Tonight,??he came through with best individual effort of the evening. He?s the only one of the remaining finalists who has never been revealed as one of the lowest vote-getters, so he?s the best individual bet to keep going.

In sharp contrast to Phillip?s easy road to the final three, Joshua nearly didn?t even make it out of the first week. Imagine how different this season would have gone had he been eliminated back in March instead of Jeremy Rosado. Joshua was again in the bottom three when there were seven contestants remaining, but he?s been the strongest of anyone since that latter scare. He seemed to be the favorite of the judges (again) on Wednesday, even if his final song of the night --?Mary J. Blige's "No More Drama" -- was a bit over-the-top in its frenzy.

And speaking of struggling, the same week in April that Joshua was in the bottom three, Jessica would have been eliminated had the judges not used their save on her. She?s sailed through the past month since then, but this wasn?t her best week. None of her solos?stood out, and she was the lone finalist to not get a standing ovation from the judges.

If Phillip and Joshua do make it to the finale, they will both owe an assist to Jimmy. The mentor is the one who picked ?We?ve Got Tonight? for Phillip, as well as prodding Joshua to go with Blige?s tune ? the only one of Joshua?s three songs that wasn?t at least 35 years old.

For Jessica? He picked ?I?ll Be There? by the Jackson 5, an attempt to make her sound younger. It didn?t work because she literally can?t make herself sound her age. She?s an old singing soul in a young body, like it or not.

Also noteworthy was that Phillip got credit for a ?moment? with his final number, though that might have been for the distracting way he was petting his leg with his left hand as much as it was for his vocals. He also earned an ?in it to win it? from Randy Jackson for the last effort.

Meanwhile, Jessica had to content herself with an endorsement from the last-place San Diego Padres. The last ?Idol? finalist to be touted by a sports team having a mediocre year was Hollie Cavanagh, who got support from Liverpool's English Premier League (that?s soccer, for the non-sports fans). That didn?t seem to help her much.

Then again, Steven Tyler did insinuate early in the show that he expected Jessica to win. So who knows? Unlike most years, it?s truly anybody?s competition with just one week remaining.

Who do you think will get cut Thursday? Share your prediction on our Facebook page!

Chris Kompanek: On the Culture Front: Cock Opens Off-Broadway, PEN Festival Storms New York and More

Mike Bartlett's buzzed about new play, Cock, from the Royal National Theatre opened to a thunderous and mostly deserved standing ovation at the Duke Thursday night. The intimate one-act focuses on the shitstorm that evolves out of a young man's inability to choose between his longtime male lover, M (Jason Butler Harner), and a woman, W (Amanda Quaid) who through a chance encounter awakens something in him he never knew existed. As the character names would suggest, Bartlett and director James McDonald have brilliantly distilled this world down to the bare minimum. The action takes place on the tiniest circle of space (colored like a greenscreen) in the round amidst risers built to look like that of a cockfight. The design brings the audience almost painfully close to the actors and provides an unparalleled closeness. It also brings the audience closer to each other, making it almost impossible to look at the stage without seeing another spectator. This can take some getting used to and is awkward at times, but it's all part of the experience.

The dialogue is so exact, and there are many truly hilarious moments -- so much so that it plays like a farce. What it lost, though, is a nuanced conversation about the Kinseyan view of sexuality being a fluid force. The young man, John (Cory Michael Smith) is the only titled character in the play, but he's an incredibly spineless and indecisive man. It's no doubt that this is Bartlett's intention, but having such an inconsequential main character, it threatens to throw this carefully calibrated world off balance. Luckily Harner is so spot on and Quaid perfectly measured yet charming to boot that this preverbal ping-pong of words rarely touches ground. The final moment may be unsatisfying and the idea of sexuality as a fluid entity undercut by a character who exemplifies the indecisive label that bisexuals are often sadly ascribed, but this is thrilling theater and the best farce off-Broadway at the moment.

On the literary front, the PEN world voices rolled into town the other week with a series of thought-provoking events featuring a who's who of great thinkers. Playwright Tony Kushner, filmmaker Marjane Satrapi, and writer Rula Jebreal, whose first novel, Miral, was turned into a film of the same name by ex-lover Julian Schnabel. Add the Kronos quartet underscoring the trio's conversation to the mix and you have a truly bizarre yet exhilarating evening.

The members of Kronos were at the top their game playing with unparalleled precision and the joy of embarking on uncharted territory. The festival opened with a party at the Standard Hotel that was even more bizarre. A chamber opera (one soprano to be precise) distilled the story of A Clockwork Orange through a warped feminist perspective and immensely atonal score by Kevin Malone. Luckily, it was only 35-minutes.

Salman Rushdie squeezed passed me right before it started to grab a front-and-center spot. I bet he's regretting it now. He was definitely displeased earlier in the night when a tribute to Christopher Hitchens turned into a bit of a scathing critique mostly due to Nation writer Katha Pollitt who voiced many criticisms and lobbed accusations of chauvinism at the late brilliantly polemic writer. Rushdie was so agitated that when the Q&A began he leaped from his front row seat to condemn the panel. It wasn't all bad and was actually fascinating to listen to. The other panelists included New Yorker writer George Packer, Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter, Nation Publisher Emeritus Victor Navasky, and moderator Ian Buruma, who was just about perfect in posing complex questions about Hitchens' place in the literary canon and what it was like to have a beer (or five) with him.

Hitch's agent even got up in the end and shared his last words with the crowd: "Captalism... downfall." Unsentimentally acute up until his last moment, he will sorely be missed. The last event I went to was a screening of Satrapi's new film, Chicken with Plums, which largely abandons the animation of her much-loved Persepolis for live action. Sadly, it was a massive disappointment with too much voice-over cluttering the story and not enough of the whimsy of her first film and the wonderful tension it created. I recently spoke with Dustin Lance Black (look for that next week in the Onion's AV Club) and he told me how the excessive voice-over in his new film, Virginia, tanked it at the Toronto Film Festival. He went back into the editing room, though, and came out with a wonderfully complex and engaging film. Hopefully, Satrapi has a chance to do the same. And please, go back to animation.

On the music front, a curious new group (Timber Timbre) opened for Feist at Radio City. Their cool murmurs and fuzzy, melancholic notes reminded me of when I saw Leonard Cohen there a couple years ago. Their set was unfortunately short, and the cavernous space threatened to swallow them up as it did with Feist even though she brought nearly two dozen people to help her wage the fight. Most problematic was her choice for the torturous trio, Mountain Men, to back her up. Their voices never rose above a half-cranked lull and their earthy swaying was grating. For her part, Feist played some of her more tuneful tracks, a number from the new album, Metals, which is quite strong. For whatever reason, though, it never quite resonated as it did listening to it on my speakers at home. Still, I had "Graveyard" stuck in my head on the walk home.

On the dance front, I went to the opening of Cedar Lake's new season this week at the Joyce Theater. They're one of my favorite companies in the city and i haven't seen them for so long, but i was ultimately underwhelmed by the program presented Tuesday night. It opened with an intriguing voice-over for "Violet Kid" in which the speaker states that you decide whether you like a piece within the first thirty seconds. It took me a little longer, but unfortunately, the talented dancers didn't win me over. Hofesh Schecter's choreography alternated between being cluttered in inconsequential. These feelings were largely echoed in Crystal Pite's Grace Engine. The piece in between those two, "Annonciation" by Angelin Preljocaj of Ballet Preljocaj, was more promising. At it's heart, it's an intimate dance between two women who represent opposing forces. It's religious in theme but can be enjoyed on a purely visceral level. At its heart, Ceder Lake is about these kind of primally stirring works. I hope to see more of them from the company in the future.

On the culinary front, I attended a private Chablis dinner held at Scott Conant's (Scarpetta) culinary suite. It was a pretty decadent affair with courses like Sea Urchin Gnocchi and Roasted Guinea Hen paired with truly great Chablis wines that can be found mostly in your local liquor store. One of the best, Roland Lavantureux's Petit Chablis 2010, can be bought online in a half-bottle for $16. After tasting nearly a dozen wines, it's clear Chablis has something over the other whites.

Facebook Quietly Launches Pages Manager iOS App, But You Probably Can?t Use It Yet

fbpagesCarefully cultivating your Facebook presence can be tough enough when you only have your personal profile to deal with, but it's a completely different story when you've got a full-blown Page (or three) to manage on top of it. To help those particular users stay on top of things, Facebook has begun to roll out a new app (called, imaginatively enough, Pages Manager) in a small handful of markets, though we in the U.S. can't play with it just yet.

Wilted swiss chard with pine nuts and oranges

A salad to satisfy spring cravings.

There?s something about the arrival of spring where I can always hear myself saying, ?This is my favorite time of the year,? even though summer and fall evoke the same statement. I think after a cold winter, I?m ready to embrace the tulips and cherry blossoms, but most of all, the variety of spring produce that is available.

After a winter filled with apples, squash and root vegetables, I?m ready with open arms for peas, asparagus, Swiss chard, spring beets, kale, garlic scapes, nettle, rhubarb and radishes. It?s like my body starts to crave all the bright and dark green leafy greens that flourish so beautifully this time of the year.

It?s not to say I won?t be as excited for all the summer bounty, but for now there?s more than enough to be creative with and I know we?ll have so many yummy dishes to keep us busy.

This wilted salad is one of my spring time cravings. With the earthy wilted chard greens, I paired sweet and citrusy orange segments, a light vinaigrette and topped it with goat cheese and toasted pine nuts. The chickpeas add substance and protein so the meat is not necessary. You can eat this as a main or serve it as a side. And, of course, I figured out all of these perfect flavor pairings with my Flavor Bible. How did I live without this book for so long?

I hope you?ll decide to give this a try. It?s a relatively simple recipe that comes together quickly if the chickpeas are made ahead of time. I can?t see why white beans or navy beans wouldn?t sub in beautifully here if that?s what you have on hand.

If you follow traditional food preparation, I?ve included the Nourishing Traditions soaking method for the chickpeas in the notes.

Hello spring in a bowl!

Wilted Swiss Chard with Pine Nuts and Oranges

8 chard stalks
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 oranges, 1 peeled and cut into segments, the other juiced
2 tabelspoons of rice wine vinegar
1 teaspoon dijon mustard
1/4 cup toasted pine nuts
1 cup cooked chickpeas (see cooking notes below)
1/4 crumbled goat cheese

Wash and cut the Swiss chard into 1-2 inch segments. In a large frying pan, add olive oil and Swiss Chard. Cook the chard until just wilted, about 3 minutes. Meanwhile, peel and cut 1 orange into bite size pieces and set aside. Juice the remaining orange. Mix the orange juice (apprx 1/4 cup), the vinegar and the mustard to make a vinaigrette. Whisk until well combined. Mix the vinaigrette into the wilted greens. Add the pine nuts, chickpeas and goat cheese. Serve warm.

Traditionally Prepared Chickpeas: Soak 1 cup of chickpeas with 3 cups of water and 3 tablespoons of whey, apple cider vinegar or lemon juice (or acid of choice) overnight but for a minimum of 8 hours. Drain and rinse the beans. In a medium sized pot, add 6 cups of water and the drained chickpeas. Bring to a boil and simmer for 40-60 minutes. Cooking time will vary depending on length of soaking time and how old the beans are. Taste the beans after 40 minutes and adjust time accordingly from there.

Umbrella

Though it?s a subject people are not comfy talking about, while an unexpected sickness, harm, or even dying of an family member attacks plus your individual insurance coverage is not enough to hide each of the connected expenses, the emotional injury worsened through the economic ramifications ranges through nerve-racking in order to devastating.
Simply 4 % involving Australia?s total population together with reliant kids possess satisfactory insurance policy to safeguard by themselves along with their family members. One number of scientific studies published by it and also Financial Solutions Organization (IFSA) on claims paid coming from 12 insurance coverage organizations found out that the normal affiliate payouts have been significantly less than the actual economic needs produced by the cutbacks received.
Few Australians have the financial resources to pay the expenses of lifetimes unpredicted risks, and yet too many don?t possess a plan in position that may protect their particular monetary protection and also way of life in the event your income earner out of the blue becomes can not perform because of disease, harm or loss of life.
Multicover insurance policy * which is, protection which includes life insurance coverage, income safety insurance, injury insurance (also referred to as essential sickness insurance), and impairment insurance plan ? isn?t a concern for a lot of Aussie households, but having multicover insurance in position will be essential to good financial organizing.
In the economic system which has a lot of struggling to generate payments, insurance plans are frequently considered an unnecessary price, as numerous Aussies require a ?she?ll end up being right? approach to thinking ahead. The simple truth is, multicover insurance is crucial for you to monetary stability, however for several, this realization just isn?t achieved until it can be too late.
Economic planning is not only just to the rich. It?s an critical method that recognizes our financial goals as well as long term targets, and also road directions out and about how we intend to accomplish individuals objectives and goals. Part of wise economic organizing can be figuring out individuals automobiles of safety, wealth design, lifestyle key events as well as ideas for contingencies. When in position, a person?s operating plan, such as multicover insurance plan, needs to be regularly modified to complement their requirements at each life stage, altered to lose aspects will no longer necessary whilst including fresh demands.
Would you establish how much multicover insurance coverage they need so as to make positive their family and also lifestyle are secure in the event the unthinkable takes place? In order to compare multicover plans, it?s important to understand what coverage you need to go well with the needs of yourself and your loved ones.
For instance, an operating couple within their middle of the Thirties and forties using 2 small children might need to plan for benefits 12 to be able to 13 instances the value of his or her after tax profits in the event that their particular revenue have been all of a sudden cut-off due to loss of life as well as handicap. Consequently, should you earn a new full-time income involving $50,1000, this kind of translates to $500,000 to $600,000 in everyday life coverage as a way to protect your own recipient?s life style if you decide to lose your life.
Mom and dad of their middle Forties whom perform regular, getting $50,000 a year, with older kids in your own home might require term life insurance within the $300,000 to be able to $450,1000 array. This kind of can vary plus your financial situation and needs ought to be talked about using a qualified insurance coverage expert.
Many people are living their own lives with the attitude in which ?it will not happen to me personally,Inch until finally tips over. This reflects a significant lack of awareness in the results surprise demise, injuries or disease may have on the loved ones. Too little Aussies have time to learn about the particular expenses of multicover insurance coverage, usually simply because they incorrectly perceive that it is really pricey. Adding to the problem is the actual understanding in which insurance plans are way too complex, along with the simple pain most of the people experience with regards to talking about decline as well as death. They only not contemplate it.
Shock insurance plan will pay out there a lump sum payment of income in the event of a major illness as well as situation for instance a cardiac event, most cancers, cerebrovascular event, lack of a new arm or leg, paralysis or another healthcare celebration described within the coverage. The average day of Aussies encountering distressing health concerns is a youthful 42 a long time. Along with trauma insurance policy in position, it is possible to trust economic insurance through the healing time period yourself and your loved ones. Matchmaker, matchmaker: News on Urijah Faber, Ronda Rousey, Matt Mitrione and more

Here's the latest fights to be made, just for you:

-- Erik Koch and UFC featherweight champ Jose Aldo put on their best Member's Only jackets and headed to the mountains to officially announce their bout at UFC 149 in Calgary.

-- After UFC bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz and pulled out of their July 7 bout, Urijah Faber will still fight at UFC 148. His opponent is still to be determined, and interim title belt will be on the line.

-- Ronda Rousey has a date for her first championship defense, kinda. She will fight Sarah Kauffman in August, but an exact date and location has not yet been announced.

-- In what is already my favorite match-up of the summer, Siyar Bahadurzada is stepping in to face Thiago Alves at UFC 149. Yoshihiro Akiyama had to pull out of the bout with Alves after an undisclosed injury.

-- Days after UFC on Fox 3, heavyweight bouts were added to UFC on Fox 4 in Los Angeles. Matt Mitrione will fight Rob Broughton and Oli Thompson will fight Phil De Fries.
