2. Have your roof inspected once a year or so and especially after a sever storm when shingles could be loosened or lost.
3. Inspect the grout on any tiles in the homes and make sure there is none missing, You have to keep water from getting behind them.
4. After heavy rains, check around the foundation of your home to make sure water drains away from the house and is not puddling near it. Standing water can cause structural damage.
5. Check you home for excessive moisture both in the summer and the winter. Moisture in the air can cause mold and structural damage. Proper ventilation means using exhaust fans in steamy bathrooms and kitchens. Sometimes even dehumidifier or fan might need to be placed in your attic or basement.
6. If you have a crawlspace, you need to check under there from time to time to make sure rainwater is not settling in there and make sure no plumbing is leaking. This can also cause moisture from standing water or if a pipe is leaking onto any joists, it can cause wood rot, mold, and structural damage.
7. Check outside spigots for leaks as well. A home owner often ignores these if they have leaks, but they could make standing water near the home that can cause problems too.
8. Check the fittings and connections for any water using appliances in your home, they can cause problems too.

Every home is different and has more or less plumbing and water issues than others. Get to know your house and be on guard for developing water problems. This is the easiest way to prevent major water damage from sneaking up on you. It can all be checked out in a few hours more than likely and it could save you thousands of dollars or a huge insurance claim in the future.
