91% Jurassic Park: An IMAX 3D Experience

All Critics (92) | Top Critics (24) | Fresh (92) | Rotten (8) | DVD (38)

The enthralling man-vs.-nature parable based on the late Michael Crichton's best-selling novel hasn't aged one bit.

The 3-D process adds not just dimension but depth - a technological extension of cinematographer Gregg Toland's deep-focus innovations in The Grapes of Wrath and Citizen Kane. The change in perspective creates greater intensity.

I'm a fan of this movie. It is thrilling, and the 3-D treatment is a nice enhancement.

This movie doesn't just stand the test of time, it transcends it.

"Jurassic Park" remains an absolute thrill from a Spielberg in top form: Funny, scary, fast-moving and full of just-right details.

"Jurassic Park" was impressive in 1993. Twenty years later, it's flawless.

Kids who love dinosaurs will love it. And who doesn't?

confirms both Spielberg's mastery of cinematic thrills and the comparatively empty bombast of today's summer tentpole movies, even the better ones.

Jurassic Park shows us a director in transition, and the film captures his transformation in its own kind of cinematic amber.

[The] 3D [conversion] provides the definitive version of this classic film. Jurassic Park has been transformed with with artistry, nuance and sophistication, and it's an absolute must-see during this brief run.

The 3D effects had me nearly jumping out of my seat. Some say Hollywood is converting too many old films to 3D. But, "Jurassic Park" was the perfect choice. There's nothing more fun than sharing a seat with a snapping dinosaur.

Spielberg treats us as he does his characters, leading us into a strange land and expecting us to make it out with all our faculties intact; it's a tall order, given the heart-stopping, bloodcurdling, limbs-numbing excitement packed into the second hour.

It is as if time has passed the movie by. "Jurassic Park" remains solid entertainment, but the awe and wonder have faded.

The thrill of seeing live dinosaurs on screen is not as acute today as it was 20 years ago admittedly, but there is still some 3D awe left in the creations that roared 65 billion years ago...

The 3D isn't pushed on the audience, but it does reveal the amount of depth that Spielberg actually put into the film 20 years ago.

While it's not the most profound of Spielberg's works or the most entertaining from a popcorn perspective, it's one of the most technically flawless movies he's ever produced.

Jurassic Park 3D is like being reunited with an old friend; an old friend that wants to eat you and maul you to death, but still. A classic is reborn in glorious IMAX with a vibrantly stunning use of 3D.

If releasing the film in 3-D is the only way to get it back in theaters, then the gimmick is an acceptable addition. The 3-D is good. But when a movie is this near flawless, nothing is needed to make it better.

The 3D conversion ruins everything, like the comet that killed the dinosaurs, making Jurassic Park the rare amusement I'd prefer to revisit at home.

A beast of a movie is gifted a superfluous-but-superb rouging of the cheeks, offering fanatics something new to study while newcomers will be ruined for any future television airings.

The tasteful Jurassic Park 3D conversion injects new wonder and excitement into one of the most captivating adventure movies ever made.

There is nothing like experiencing this fabulous, larger-than-life, groundbreaking movie where it was meant to be experienced. And in 3D!

This is an immensely entertaining film, as long as you can overlook the many minor flaws that permeate its structure. (Complete Content Details for Parents also available)

But really, what makes "Jurassic Park" great is that it is a Steven-Spielberg-master-class in constructing action set-pieces.

Modewarre clubs kick on with reserve upgrade | Surf Coast Times ...

Mount Moriac Reserve upgrade

Modewarre Cricket Club president Ash Field, Modewarre Football/Netball Club chairman Steve McGarrigle, Andrew Katos, Surf Coast Shire mayor Libby Coker, Hugh Delahunty, Member for Western Victoria Simon Ramsay and Ali Salmon from the Mount Moriac Tennis Club at Mount Moriac Reserve.

Mount Moriac Reserve will get new netball and tennis courts and a better sports pavilion through a $1.35 million upgrade.

Surf Coast Shire, the state government and two local sports clubs are all contributing money towards the project, which was announced recently. The new pavilion will feature more accessible facilities, including improved change rooms and a flexible layout with more functional community spaces. The project will also create a third netball court, two tennis courts and a new play space.

The shire and the state government are each putting in $650,000, while reserve tenants Modewarre Football/Netball Club and Modewarre Cricket Club are adding $25,000 each. South Barwon MP Andrew Katos thanked the shire and the two sports clubs for providing funding towards the upgrade.

Minister for Sport and Recreation Hugh Delahunty said Modewarre?s football, netball, cricket and tennis clubs were made up of male and female teams but the existing pavilion was ill-equipped to cater for all users. He said a key objective of the Coalition government was to build healthy and active communities.

?To achieve this goal, we need quality community facilities that encourage local people to play the sports they love for many years to come. Our investment in this project is part of our plan to build more sustainable local venues that make a difference to local people.

?Sporting facilities are important community assets and provide a social hub, particularly in regional areas. As well as the health benefits, we are also helping to stimulate the local economy and create jobs throughout the construction phase.?

The state government funding comprises $350,000 from the Community Facility Funding Program and $300,000 from the Regional Growth Fund?s Putting Locals First Program.

Actual pilot refutes theoretical takeover of an airline by way of Android app

Ask the Pilot

Could an exploit via an Android app really hijack a plane? Not so, says a prominent pilot/author

Finally, some sanity. After many a blog post this week re-reported Help Net Security's "Hijacking airplanes with an Android phone" piece -- in which security consultant and pilot Hugo Teso apparently demonstrated how he could theoretically interfere with an aircraft's flight management system -- and headlines grew more and more alarmist, Patrick Smith, editor of the popular "Ask the Pilot" blog has a few things to say about the matter.

Starting with, "This is my pre-emptive plea, an open letter to the media to rein in this silly airplane story before it gets too much traction."

We're listening.

Obama asks Newtown victim's mother to deliver weekly address

UPDATED 3:13 pm ET

Instead of personally giving his weekly address to the nation, President Barack Obama has asked Francine Wheeler, whose son was killed in the Dec. 14 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary school, to deliver remarks this week.

Obama tweeted the news after it was first announced by White House press secretary Jay Carney at Friday's briefing:

Carney earlier in the day noted that family members of the Newtown, Conn., shooting have been lobbying lawmakers in Washington, D.C., this week to pass legislation to reduce gun violence. "He believes their voices and resolve have been critical to the continued progress we've seen in the Senate," Carney said of the families. "With that in mind, the president has asked Francine Wheeler, who lost her 6-year-old son, Ben, on that terrible day, to speak to the American people in this week's weekly address."

Carney said this is the first time in this administration that someone other than the president or vice president has been asked to deliver the weekly address, which is broadcast each Saturday to the American public on radio and television.

Some Egyptians warm to jailed former president Mubarak ahead of retrial

Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak sits inside a cage in a courtroom in Cairo on June 2, 2012.

By Charlene Gubash and Taha Belal, NBC News

CAIRO, Egypt - In June of 2012, Egypt held its breath in anticipation of the court verdict against former President Hosni Mubarak, toppled by a revolution in which hundreds died at the hands of the security forces.?

Egyptians celebrate in Cairo as they hear from a car radio that ousted president Hosni Mubarak has been sentenced to 25 years in prison.

They crowded around TV sets in coffee shops and cheered when the judge sentenced him to the maximum of 25 years in prison. But demonstrators also poured into streets across the country with many wanting to see the former autocratic leader sentenced to death instead.

What a difference 10 months makes. Ahead of his retrial on Saturday, social media was virtually silent on the subject and newspaper coverage was scant.

On the streets of Cairo, nine months of rule by Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, rising crime and a sputtering economy have led some to conclude that the revolution?s treatment of the former leader was too harsh.

?Even if Mubarak was bad, I don?t like my president to be in prison like this. He shouldn?t be treated the way he was after the revolution,? caf? owner Abdel Nabi al Shaer, 48,?said.? ?We should remember the good things, living in peace for 30 years. I don?t have to remember the bad.???

A journalist who asked that her name not be used, went even further. ?I would like to tell Mubarak we are sorry,? she said.

Mubarak, a staunch ally of the United States, was charged as an accessory to murder for failing to stop the killing of more than 800 people during the January 25 Revolution, as the movement that toppled him became known.

A thief or a job creator?
He was the first ruler overthrown by the Arab Spring movements to stand trial in person, appearing in court in a hospital bed. After his sentence, Mubarak challenged the ruling and a retrial was ordered in January.

Florist Khalid Ramadan wanted Mubarak set free. "Now I can't walk with my children on the street,

Mubarak, now 84, ?is also being investigated for squandering public funds. His sons, Gamal and Alaa, face retrial on charges of financial corruption.

One of Mubarak's lawyers, Yousri Abdul Razak, said he was confident his client would be cleared.

"President Mubarak asked for the police to show patience to the protesters," he said, adding that there was no evidence that Mubarak asked security forces to put down the demonstrations.?

Florist Khalid Ramadan agreed Mubarak should be set free.

?Now I can?t walk with my children on the street,? the 30-year-old said. ?Since Morsi took over I haven?t had any work. Hosni was a thief but there was work. I have three kids and I can?t feed them.?

But anger toward Mubarak remains. Fruit seller Mohamed Abded Hamid said he thought the former leader deserved the ultimate punishment.

Fruit seller Mohamed Abded Hamid said he thought Mubarak deserved the ultimate punishment. "I hope (Mubarak) will get the death sentence because (he) oppressed a lot of people,

?I hope [Mubarak] will get the death sentence because [he] oppressed a lot of people,? he said. ?If they [the Mubarak regime] hadn?t, there wouldn?t have been demonstrations in the first place.?

University student David Azer poured scorn on Mubarak and Morsi equally.

?I am not paying attention and am fed up because Morsi is doing nothing. He is not the president we want. Mubarak should be imprisoned for life because he did a lot of bad things.??

Orioles Beat Red Sox 8-5: Manny Machado's Home Run Caps 9th-Inning Rally (VIDEO)

BOSTON -- Manny Machado's three-run homer capped a five-run ninth inning and gave the Baltimore Orioles an 8-5 win over the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night.

The Red Sox had gone ahead 5-3 in the sixth on consecutive homers by Daniel Nava and Jarrod Saltalamacchia. But closer Joel Hanrahan couldn't hold the lead on a night when their nearly 10-year home sellout streak ended after two seasons in which they missed the playoffs.

Chris Davis led off the ninth with his fifth homer. Hanrahan (0-1) retired the next two batters, then allowed a single by Ryan Flaherty. Then he struggled with his control, walking Nolan Reimold and Nate McLouth to load the bases and throwing a wild pitch that brought pinch runner Alexi Casilla home with the tying run.

On the next pitch, Machado hit the ball over the Green Monster for his first homer. Jim Johnson pitched the ninth for his third save.

Darren O'Day (1-0) got the win.

The sellout streak began on May 15, 2003, lasted 820 games, including the postseason, and was the longest in major pro sports history. It broke the record of 814 set by the NBA's Portland Trail Blazers from 1977-95. Boston's streak of 794 regular-season sellouts also is the longest in major pro sports history. The previous longest regular-season streak in major league baseball history was 455 set by the Cleveland Indians from 1995-2001.

Nava gave the Red Sox a 4-3 lead with his third homer in three games, an opposite-field shot over the Green Monster. Saltalamacchia followed with his first homer, a hard shot over the right-field fence.

Baltimore took a 1-0 lead in the first with the help of Boston's first error of the season. Nate McLouth walked before Machado hit a fly ball to right-center. Center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury and right fielder Shane Victorino converged on it. Victorino ducked in front of Ellsbury and the ball fell safely. Victorino was charged with the error.

Machado moved to third on the play and scored on a groundout by Nick Markakis.

The Red Sox tied it in the second on a walk to Nava and an RBI-double by Saltalamacchia. They went ahead 3-1 in the third when Jackie Bradley Jr. led off with a walk, Ellsbury tripled him home and Victorino hit a sacrifice fly.

Another error helped the Orioles tie the game in the fourth. Markakis started the inning with his first homer of the season. Adam Jones then walked, extending his hitting streak to all eight games, and moved up on a wild pitch. Matt Wieters then singled to left and Jones scored when the ball eluded Bradley.

NOTES: The game was delayed by rain for 43 minutes after the fifth inning with the score 3-3. ... Reimold returned to the lineup after leaving Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Minnesota Twins with a strained right hamstring. ... There was a moment of silence before the game for Dave O'Hara, the former New England sports editor for The Associated Press in Boston, who died Wednesday at the age of 86. ... The Red Sox activated SS Stephen Drew from the seven-day concussion disabled list, optioned SS Jose Iglesias to Pawtucket and called up RHP Alex Wilson from that Triple-A team. ... The Orioles traded RHP Luis Ayala to Atlanta for LHP Chris Jones. Jones was assigned to Double-A Bowie. Baltimore purchased the contract of OF Chris Dickerson from Triple-A Norfolk.

Baltimore Fishbowl ? Fitness Q&A with Erin Olsen of MAC Wellness

Erin3

Ah?the warm weather is here. That means shorts, tank tops, and bathing suits for the foreseeable future. Maybe some of you have dutifully stuck with your New Year?s fitness resolution this far (congratulations, and also, please tell us your secret). Or maybe you never made one to begin with. Or maybe you?re just getting around to committing to fitness. In any event, if you?re starting to panic that beach season is just around the corner and there?s absolutely no way you?re going to be ready, we recommend a conversation (or training session, or twelve) with Erin Olsen, a trainer at MAC Wellness. Her infectious enthusiasm and encouragement is bound to motivate (and educate) even the most dedicated couch potato. We recently asked her advice about getting into shape for summer, and?seriously?could swear we felt healthier by the end of the conversation.

Baltimore Fishbowl: ?So Erin, tell us a little about yourself. How did you get interested in fitness, and in being a personal trainer? What do you specialize in?

For a majority of my life I was a swimmer ? and played soccer for a few years. I always enjoyed being active, and come middle school and high school I was fascinated with strength training, so you could say I have always had a ?thing? for health and fitness. I decided I was going to attend Towson University, and obtain a BS degree in Exercise Science. I became a trainer because I wanted to work with people to help prevent them from getting heart disease and other health issues. One of my coworkers who was a past figure competitor, told me she wanted to do a fitness bikini contest and asked if I wanted to do it too. I was immediately intrigued, and said yes! She taught me about clean eating, and not to be afraid of heavy weight training. I have been competing now for four years, and recently earned my Pro-Card as a Bikini Competitor with NABBA. As a trainer, I specialize in basic strength training, body building, and weight loss.Erin3

That?s quite a resume. And it brings us to our next question, which is, of course, about the approaching summer. Many of us are starting to think about how we?ll look on the beach. Where (or how) do we start planning and getting fit for summer?

First things first, it?s all about the ?diet.? I do not like the word diet because it sounds so harsh, and depriving. So I say it?s all about a healthy lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle isn?t just exercising and eating well, it?s about eating foods in their most natural forms (not necessarily organic all the time) also known as ?clean,? and strength training more often than doing cardiovascular exercise. So get your ?diet? right, and hit the weights! And for all the women out there, don?t be afraid about getting ?bulky!? Women can?t get bulky, they don?t have enough testosterone in their bodies (like men) to get bulky!

Ooh. That?s interesting. Now, let?s say we started today, and got really, really dedicated to a fitness regimen. What kind of results can we reasonably expect in the next couple of months? Can you help us with setting realistic expectations?

Nothing happens overnight. Once you clean up your eating habits, and eat regularly (about 5 small meals a day, without skipping meals) you may automatically see results in as little as 2 weeks. If you have been close to sedentary, and add in strength training at least 3 times a week, and cardio 3 times a week, you can see even more results in as little as 4-6 weeks! It all depends on the person and his or her current lifestyle and fitness level. If you started today, cleaned up the eating lifestyle, and exercised at least an hour a day with 45 minutes of that being strength training, your body will be leaner, and more toned for sure!
