Heart worm also affects other species apart from pet dogs. And it is curable and preventive action can also be taken.

1. What are the general symptoms of the disease?

The affected Dogs may have cough, dullness, and mostly have constant panting, unrelated to any strenuous activity, such as walking or running. In fact, they may refuse to move.

2. How does it occur?

Mosquitoes are generally the vectors, or carriers, which are involved the most in carrying the heart worm larvae to the animals.

3. What is the infective type of larvae that is associated with the transmission
of these heart worms?

The third stage larvae that is transmitted by the mosquito bites.

This happens all over the world, where mosquitoes are present.
Generally, the incidence is lower in colder months, since mosquitoes
become dormant in the cold, and therefore in colder months mosquitoes
do not breed. It happens in Summer, especially after rains.

In females, the length may be as much as 27 centimeters, and 17 centimeters in the
case of males,it is about twenty-seven centimeters and in the case of males, it is about
seventeen centimeters in length.

5. Is there any medication which can prevent the onset of this disease?

Yes, to prevent, Vermectin is the drug most used for prevention of the disease.

6. Is the medication only for heart worms or others also?

No. The medication is meant for all types of worms.
For example, it is useful for hook, whip, round and of course heart worms.

7. What is the name ofthe drug used for therapy and prevention?

Ivermectin and milbemycin oxime may be used for both purposes.
Ivermectin is available in injection form and oral form.

Additionally, the forms for external application are also
available. The cost factor needs to be worked out for all these
treatments.

8. When should these drugs be used for prophylaxis?

One month before the mosquito season and up to two months after the
mosquito season, ivermectin or milbemycin oxime may be given
once monthly as a prophylaxis. Diethylcarbamazine is indicated for therapy.
