Colitis disease is the inflammation of the colon particularly the inner lining of the large intestine known as the mucosal layer. The symptoms of an early case of colitis disease include dehydration, digestion difficulties, gas and bloating. When the disease becomes more serious, the symptoms are diarrhea, vomiting, unbearable abdominal pain and the presence of blood in the feces due to rectal bleeding. Other symptoms include anemia, reduced appetite, exhaustion and stunted growth especially with children. Some of the complications include liver cirrhosis, arthritis and colon cancer.
Drink lots of water to keep you hydrated especially during diarrhea. Fluids are also important for the inflamed part of the colon because makes its absorption work easier and avoids complications. As much as you can, keep away from using chemicals or medication that might have bowel inflammation as a side effect. An example is the drug accutane used to treat acne. Diagnosis of the disease can be done by a doctor through a stool sample, colonoscopy, a physical test or by using a blood test.
Depending on what causes the colitis disease, there are therefore different types of colitis diseases. Some of them include microscopic colitis, infectious colitis, isechemic colitis, chemical colitis and radiation colitis. Other types of colitis include fermentative colitis, allergic colitis, toxic colitis, grave colitis, granular colitis, lymphocytic colitis, tubercular colitis and organic colitis.
Radiation colitis. This a colitis disease caused by the destruction of the colon using radiation. This occurs during treatment of other conditions especially cancers in the pelvic region. The symptoms include stomach spasms.
Microscopic colitis. Microscopic colitis is thought to be as a result of an autoimmune disorder. The symptoms include persistent and dilute diarrhea with no blood in it.
Infectious colitis. This colitis disease can be as a result of infection by a bacterium, a virus or a parasite.
A protozoan infection occurs as a result of consumption of contaminated food or water and it is treatable using anti parasitic medication. One of its common symptoms is diarrhea.
Bacteria infection on the other hand causes bloody diarrhea. Common bacteria include shigella, salmonella, campylobacter jejuni?? and e coli. Treatment is possible with antibiotics.
Ischemic colitis. It is other wise known as the lack of blood flow. This colitis disease is as a result of the blood vessels being unable to supply the colon with enough blood. The symptoms include diarrhea and bowel movements with bleeding.
